Living in Padangpanjang
Padangpanjang is located at an altitude of more than 700 meters above sea level making the air temperature cool. The beauty of Padangpanjang is amplified by the three mountains surrounding the city namely Mt. Merapi, Mt. Singgalang and Mt. Tandikek, making Padangpanjang a great place to study.
Padangpanjang is known as the city of ‘Serambi Mekkah’ or ‘Veranda of Mecca’. The Islamic atmosphere can be easily seen in the city, such as the many mosques, reciting of Al Qur’an verses from the mosques, many Pesantren / Islamic Schools, the dominance of Muslim dress such as women wearing veils, and the presence of Arabic calligraphy etc.
The Padangpanjang community lives in an atmosphere and environment with strong teachings of Islam. Open dress / exposed genitalia / acting with shame is despised in society. Drinking alcohol and narcotics is also prohibited. Like the rest of West Sumatra, the people of Padangpanjang are friendly and are always welcome to guests.
In the daily life of the Minangkabau majority society of Padangpanjang, the people, besides complying with regulations set by the government, also adhere to traditional customs. In some areas of West Sumatra called nagari, which are found around the city of Padangpanjang, strong customary laws are still found and obeyed. If there are people who violate these customs, then the traditional laws will be enforced. These laws have been passed down through the generations of families in each nagari.
